You need to agree on the alternation leave with your employer. You can get an alternation leave form from the TE Office or at the www.suomi.fi service.
Your employer has to hire an unemployed job-seeker as your substitute for the duration of your alternation leave. The substitute need not work at the same tasks as you, but the working hours should be at least the same. You can find a suitable substitute yourself or ask help from the TE Office. Alternation compensation will not be paid for the period of alternation leave during which a substitute has not been hired.
It is very important that you ask your employer to send the alternation contract to the TE Office BEFORE the start of the alternation leave. In addition to the alternation contract, you need to send to the TE Office an employment contract or other reliable proof that a substitute has been hired for the duration of your alternation leave. Without those documents the TE Office will not give a statement on the case, and without a statement we cannot pay the alternation compensation.
Once you have made the alternation contract, you can fill in an application for alternation compensation and send it to us. You can fill in the application for alternation compensation electronically in OmaYTK or download the application form here. You need to append a salary certificate for a minimum of 52 weeks before the start of the alternation leave. The salary certificate should show absences without pay and the information on whether the fringe benefits will remain in force during the alternation leave. Remember to apply for alternation compensation within three months from the start of the alternation leave. It is advisable to submit the application at the beginning of the leave; then we can pay the alternation compensation as soon as possible.
